Russia Strikes Kyiv with Ballistic Missiles; Fires and Casualties Reported

On the morning of December 20, 2024, multiple explosions were reported in Kyiv after Russia launched a missile attack targeting the Ukrainian capital. The Ukrainian Air Force had warned of an incoming missile strike shortly before the explosions were heard around 7 a.m. local time. According to reports, Russia fired at least five Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles and two Kh-47M2 Kinzhal aero ballistic missiles from the Bryansk region and MiG-31 aircraft. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that debris from intercepted missiles caused fires and damage in several districts, including Holosiivskyi, Solomensky, Shevchenkivsky, and Dniprovskyi. Cars were set ablaze, and emergency services were responding to the scene. There are reports of casualties. Ukrainian air defense systems were activated and are repelling the attack.
