Kolkata Court Convicts Sanjay Roy in RG Kar Medical College Rape-Murder; Sentencing on January 20
Jan 18, 2025, 09:00 AM
A Kolkata court has found Sanjay Roy guilty of the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Additional District Judge Anirban Das of the Sealdah Court delivered the verdict on January 18, convicting Roy under Sections 64, 66, and 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The incident occurred on August 9 last year, sparking nationwide outrage and prolonged protests by the medical community. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, was arrested shortly after the incident. In court, he maintained his innocence, claiming he was falsely implicated and that the real perpetrators were still at large. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which took over the investigation following a High Court order, has sought the death penalty for Roy. The court will announce the quantum of punishment on January 20.
