Google to Buy 500 MW from Kairos Power's Seven Small Nuclear Reactors by 2035
Oct 14, 2024, 07:25 PM
Google has signed a groundbreaking deal with nuclear-energy startup Kairos Power to purchase power generated by seven small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs), including the 50-megawatt Hermes project in Tennessee. Under the terms of the agreement, Google will back the construction of these reactors, marking a first-of-its-kind deal in the United States. The reactors are expected to come online between 2030 and 2035, aiming to add 500 megawatts of carbon-free energy to the grid by the end of the decade. This clean energy will help power Google's data centers, particularly supporting its growing artificial intelligence operations. This marks the world's first corporate agreement to purchase energy from SMRs and underscores Google's commitment to advancing clean energy technologies.
