45,000 US Dockworkers Suspend Strike Until January 2025 in Tentative Wage Deal
Oct 3, 2024, 11:05 PM
The International Longshoremen's Association (ILA), representing 45,000 U.S. dockworkers at East and Gulf Coast ports, has agreed to suspend its strike until January 15, 2025, allowing time for negotiations on a new contract. The strike, the first since 1977, began on Tuesday and halted operations at ports from Maine to Texas. A tentative agreement was reached between the ILA and the U.S. Maritime Alliance, including a proposed wage increase of 62% over six years. The current contract will be extended until January 15, 2025, while negotiations continue over remaining issues. Workers are expected to return to work by tomorrow.
