Russia Blocks Discord for Violating Local Laws, Roskomnadzor Cites Illegal Content

Russian authorities have blocked the instant messaging platform Discord, citing violations of local laws. The ban was announced by Roskomnadzor, Russia's communications regulator, which stated that Discord failed to remove nearly 1,000 items of illegal content flagged by authorities. This action follows similar bans on other foreign tech platforms. Users in Russia have reported difficulties accessing Discord, with some able to use the service only through VPNs. The Downdetector service confirmed these access issues. Discord became the first blocked Western social platform in Russia. The ban is part of a broader crackdown on social media and messaging platforms in the country, with Roskomnadzor mentioning violations related to terrorist and extremist content.
