U.S. Government to Pay $116M to 103 Women for Sexual Abuse at Closed FCI Dublin Prison
Dec 17, 2024, 10:15 PM
The U.S. government has agreed to pay nearly $116 million to settle lawsuits filed by more than 100 women who allege they were sexually abused at the now-closed Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Dublin, California. The settlement, approved on Tuesday, will provide an average of about $1.1 million to each of the 103 women who filed individual lawsuits against the Bureau of Prisons. The prison, notorious for its rampant staff-on-inmate sexual misconduct, was dubbed the 'rape club.' This settlement follows a separate class-action lawsuit resolved last week, in which the Bureau of Prisons agreed to reforms including the appointment of a court monitor and a public acknowledgment of the pervasive abuse and retaliation at FCI Dublin. The Bureau of Prisons has condemned all forms of sexually abusive behavior and emphasized its commitment to protecting individuals in its custody.
