Bloomberg Faces Backlash for Breaking August 2 Embargo on Evan Gershkovich Release from Russia
Aug 5, 2024, 02:38 PM
Bloomberg News has come under fire for breaking an embargo on August 2 regarding the release of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich from Russian custody. The White House had requested news outlets to hold their stories on the prisoner swap until Gershkovich and others were in U.S. custody. Bloomberg was the first to report the news, breaking the embargo that other outlets had agreed to. In response to the backlash, Bloomberg Editor-In-Chief (EIC) John Micklethwait announced disciplinary action against several staffers involved in the incident. One of the reporters who wrote the embargo-breaking story has been fired.
