LA Times Owner Patrick Soon-Shiong Blocks Kamala Harris Endorsement, Leading to Editor's Resignation
Oct 23, 2024, 11:44 PM
Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, billionaire owner of the Los Angeles Times who purchased the newspaper for $500 million in 2018, has blocked the newspaper from endorsing a presidential candidate in the upcoming 2024 election. The editorial board had been preparing to endorse Kamala Harris for president, but Soon-Shiong informed them that the Times would not make any endorsement. "We do not comment on internal discussions or decisions about editorials or endorsements," Soon-Shiong stated. This decision led to the resignation of the newspaper's editor. The Los Angeles Times had previously refrained from making presidential endorsements from the mid-1970s until 2008.
