Supreme Court Orders CBI Probe, CISF Protection in Kolkata Doctor's Rape-Murder Case by August 22
Aug 20, 2024, 07:32 AM
The Supreme Court of India has taken suo motu cognizance of the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The court has criticized the West Bengal government for investigation lapses and has ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to submit a status report by August 22. Additionally, the Supreme Court has constituted an eight-member National Task Force, including senior doctors, to address safety measures and protection for medical professionals. The court has also directed the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to provide protection to RG Kar Medical Hospital and College. Protests by resident doctors have erupted across various cities, including Shimla, Jaipur, and Delhi, with some doctors forming human chains and blocking roads. The Supreme Court has asked protesting doctors to resume work, assuring them that their concerns are being addressed.
