Express Scripts Overcharges Postal Service Employees by $45 Million Over Five Years

Express Scripts, one of the largest pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) in the country, overcharged U.S. Postal Service employees by $45 million for their prescription drugs during a recent five-year period, according to a federal audit. Nearly half of these overcharges stemmed from rebates that Express Scripts negotiated with drugmakers. Instead of passing back 100% of that money to the health plan, as the contract required, the PBM retained millions for itself. This incident has contributed to growing concerns on Capitol Hill regarding the practices of PBMs.
