West Point Apologizes for Administrative Error in Hegseth Admission Claim
Dec 12, 2024, 04:37 PM
The United States Military Academy at West Point has issued an apology after mistakenly informing ProPublica that Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump's nominee for Secretary of Defense, had not been accepted to the academy. Sen. Jim Banks, R-Ind., has demanded accountability from West Point for the error, accusing the academy's officials of trying to 'sabotage' Hegseth's nomination. Hegseth, a veteran of the Army National Guard with service in Iraq and Afghanistan, had to present his acceptance letter from 1999 to disprove the false claims. ProPublica, which was preparing to publish a story alleging Hegseth lied about his admission, decided not to publish after the truth was revealed by ProPublica editor Jesse Eisinger. West Point confirmed that Hegseth was indeed offered admission to the Class of 2003 but did not attend due to an administrative error.
