DOJ Sues Virginia and Governor Youngkin Over Illegal Voter Purges Before Election
Oct 11, 2024, 09:46 PM
The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a federal lawsuit against the state of Virginia, alleging that it is violating the National Voter Registration Act by illegally purging voters from its rolls within 90 days of an election. The lawsuit accuses Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin and Attorney General Jason Miyares of systematically removing voters, including noncitizens, which could disenfranchise legitimate voters. A coalition of immigrant-rights groups and the League of Women Voters in Virginia has also filed a lawsuit over the ongoing voter purges. Governor Youngkin defends the state's actions, stating that they are enforcing a 2006 law to remove noncitizens from voter rolls.
