Russia Aids Houthis via Iran's IRGC for Attacks on Western Ships in Red Sea
Oct 24, 2024, 07:33 PM
Russia has reportedly provided satellite targeting data to Yemen's Houthi rebels, aiding them in attacks on Western ships in the Red Sea with missiles and drones earlier this year, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. The data was allegedly funneled through members of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) embedded with the Houthis in Yemen. These attacks have targeted a critical artery for global trade, disrupting shipping in the region. Since November 2023, the militants have attacked more than 100 ships, sinking two and hijacking another. Moscow's assistance indicates an effort by the Kremlin to tie up the U.S. in the Middle East and further destabilize the region. Additionally, reports suggest that the Houthis have sought more weapons from Viktor Bout, Russia's notorious arms dealer, whose arrival in the Red Sea poses further risks to global shipping.
