Trump May Delay TikTok Ban; Adviser Vows App Won't 'Go Dark'
Jan 16, 2025, 03:12 PM
President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly considering an executive order to delay the US ban on TikTok, aiming to preserve the popular video-sharing app while addressing national security concerns over data privacy. Incoming National Security Adviser Mike Waltz stated that the administration will prevent TikTok from "going dark" as long as a viable deal is on the table. The ban, originally set to take effect on Sunday, could be postponed for an additional two to three months. TikTok's CEO Shou Zi Chew reportedly flew to Mar-a-Lago last month to discuss the matter. With 170 million US users, TikTok is regarded by Trump as a "fantastic platform" with an "amazing" algorithm. The move would provide more time for ByteDance Ltd., TikTok's parent company, to negotiate a sale or partnership with a US company, potentially averting the app's shutdown amid bipartisan concerns over national security and data protection.
