Spain, Ireland, and Norway Officially Recognize Palestinian State on May 28 with East Jerusalem as Capital
May 28, 2024, 09:19 AM
Spain, Ireland, and Norway have officially recognized the State of Palestine on May 28, marking a significant diplomatic move. The Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, announced the decision, emphasizing that it aligns with UN resolutions and aims to establish peace in the Middle East. The recognition includes the 1967 borders and East Jerusalem as the capital. This decision comes amid heightened tensions in the region and criticism from Israel, which accused Sanchez of incitement. The move is seen as a response to Israel's actions in Gaza and has been described as a historic step towards a two-state solution. Irish PM Simon Harris also supported the decision, stating that a two-state solution is the only way forward. With this addition, 146 countries now recognize the State of Palestine. The European Union's rift with Israel is expected to widen following this coordinated decision.
