Ukraine Uses French AASM Bombs, Strikes Russian Base in Ivanovskoe
Jan 2, 2025, 07:56 AM
Ukrainian forces have used French-supplied AASM-250 "Hammer" precision-guided bombs in combat for the first time, marking a significant development in their military capabilities. Footage released by the Ukrainian Air Force's 299th Tactical Aviation Brigade shows Su-25 aircraft deploying these bombs in at least ten precision strike missions against Russian targets. The AASM-250, a 250 kg guided munition developed by Safran, allows for precision strikes at extended ranges and has been integrated into Soviet-era aircraft like the Su-25, MiG-29, and Su-27. The bombs, equipped with a solid-fuel rocket motor, enable strikes from over 70 km when launched from higher altitudes. France committed to providing 600 AASM kits to Ukraine in 2024, with deliveries continuing into 2025. Separately, Ukrainian forces reportedly targeted a Russian military base in Ivanovskoe, Kursk region, using HIMARS missiles. The strike occurred during an award ceremony for the 810th Marine Brigade. This development reflects Ukraine's adaptation to dwindling stocks of Soviet and Western munitions by integrating advanced Western weaponry into its existing fleet. The use of these guided bombs and missile strikes is expected to enhance Ukraine's ability to conduct precise, long-range operations while minimizing collateral damage.
