Chepkirui Leads Kenyan Sweep, Nageeye Claims Men's Title at 2024 NYC Marathon

Abdi Nageeye of the Netherlands and Sheila Chepkirui of Kenya won the men's and women's races, respectively, at the 2024 TCS New York City Marathon held on Sunday. Chepkirui led a Kenyan sweep of the women's podium, finishing with a time of 2 hours, 24 minutes, and 35 seconds in her NYC Marathon debut. Defending champion Hellen Obiri finished second, and Vivian Cheruiyot placed third. Nageeye, the silver medalist from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, claimed his first major marathon victory by pulling away in the final mile to finish in 2 hours, 7 minutes, and 39 seconds. Over 50,000 runners from more than 150 countries participated in the race, which spanned all five boroughs of New York City. Conner Mantz and Sara Vaughn were the top American finishers, both placing sixth in their respective races. Mantz completed the course in 2 hours, 9 minutes flat, while Vaughn finished in 2 hours, 26 minutes, and 56 seconds. Clayton Young, another American, finished seventh in the men's race with a time of 2:09:21. Participants and spectators enjoyed clear skies and seasonable temperatures, creating a festive atmosphere with over two million people lining the streets to cheer on the runners. The NYC Marathon, known for being the largest marathon in the world, saw extensive preparations from the NYPD and city agencies to manage road closures and ensure safety.
