France Leads $1 Billion Lebanon Aid Conference, Pledges €100M, Calls for Ceasefire
Oct 24, 2024, 09:02 AM
France hosted an international conference in Paris to raise funds and mobilize humanitarian aid for Lebanon amid increasing tensions between Hezbollah and Israel. President Emmanuel Macron announced that France would provide a €100 million ($108 million) aid package to support Lebanon, emphasizing the need for 'massive aid' due to the displacement of a million people caused by the conflict. The conference successfully raised a total of $1 billion, including $800 million in humanitarian aid and $200 million allocated for the Lebanese armed forces, with plans to provide key supplies to the Lebanese army, as stated by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot. Macron also called for a ceasefire, criticizing Israel's operations in southern Lebanon and expressing regret that Iran engaged Hezbollah against Israel.
