FTC Refers TikTok Complaint to DOJ's Civil Division Over Child Privacy and FTC Act Violations
Jun 18, 2024, 07:53 PM
The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has referred a complaint against TikTok and its parent company ByteDance to the Department of Justice (DOJ). The FTC's investigation found reason to believe that TikTok and ByteDance may be violating the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and the FTC Act. The referral to the DOJ's Civil Division indicates that the FTC believes pursuing a case is in the public interest. This action follows a previous settlement in 2019 where TikTok paid $5.7 million for alleged COPPA violations. The move also comes after TikTok and ByteDance sued over the recently passed Protecting Americans From Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act.
