Two Arrested for Flying Drones Dangerously Close to Logan Airport in Boston Harbor
Dec 15, 2024, 08:58 PM
Two men, Robert Duffy, 42, of Charlestown, and Jeremy Folcik, 32, of Bridgewater, were arrested in Boston on Saturday night for flying drones dangerously close to Logan International Airport, according to police. The incident began when a Boston police officer used advanced monitoring technology to track the drone's location and operators on Long Island in Boston Harbor. The suspects fled when police arrived, but Duffy and Folcik were captured, with a drone found in Duffy's backpack. A third suspect escaped in a small vessel and remains at large. The arrests come amid a series of drone sightings across the Northeast, prompting concerns about safety and security, although officials have stated there is no evidence suggesting these sightings pose a threat. The Boston Police Department, in coordination with Homeland Security, Massachusetts State Police, the Joint Terrorism Task Force, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and Logan Airport Air Traffic Control, emphasized the importance of adhering to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) safety guidelines, noting the significant risks drones pose to aircraft. Duffy and Folcik face trespassing charges, with potential for further fines or charges, and were found inside the decommissioned Long Island Health Campus.
