Thailand Announces Plans to Join BRICS at Nizhny Novgorod Summit
Jun 17, 2024, 01:13 PM
Thailand has announced its intention to join BRICS, a group of developing countries that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The announcement was made by Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa, who handed a formal letter to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during a BRICS summit in Nizhny Novgorod. Thailand's Cabinet has approved a draft letter outlining the country's intention, and the membership could be announced in October. Experts believe that while the membership could offer mostly symbolic benefits, it would reinforce Thailand's role on the global stage.
