EU Parliament Approves von der Leyen II Commission 370-282, Ribera and Fitto Named Vice-Presidents
Nov 27, 2024, 11:33 AM
The European Parliament has approved Ursula von der Leyen's new team of 26 European Commissioners, securing her second term as President of the European Commission. The vote, held in Strasbourg on November 27, endorsed the new Commission, known as von der Leyen II, with 370 votes in favor, 282 against, and 36 abstentions. The new Commission includes Teresa Ribera from Spain and Raffaele Fitto as vice-presidents. Von der Leyen praised Ribera as a 'true and committed European' amid opposition from the Spanish People's Party (PP), which voted against the Commission due to her inclusion. The approval allows the Commission to take office on Sunday, beginning its five-year mandate. Despite the majority, the vote revealed fractures within the Parliament, with splits among political groups and a perception of the Commission being more right-leaning than previous ones.
