VisitSyrian Rebels Burn Tomb of Hafez al-Assad, Ending Assad Dynasty
Dec 11, 2024, 08:32 PM
In a significant act of defiance, Syrian rebels have set fire to the tomb of former President Hafez al-Assad in the northwestern town of Al Qardaha, Latakia province. Hafez al-Assad, who ruled Syria for 30 years until his death in 2000, was the father of Bashar al-Assad, the ousted leader whose regime recently collapsed. Videos and images circulating on social media show armed men shouting slogans around the burning mausoleum. The destruction of the tomb symbolizes the end of the Assad family's dynasty, which was terminated last Sunday when Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia.
