17 Dead as Assad Loyalists Ambush Syrian Forces During Arrest Operation in Tartous
Dec 26, 2024, 07:00 AM
At least 17 people, including 14 Syrian security personnel, were killed and 10 others wounded in an ambush by supporters of the ousted Assad regime in Tartous province, according to Syria's Interior Ministry. The clashes erupted as security forces attempted to arrest a former official linked to crimes at Saydnaya prison. Interior Minister Muhammad Abdel Rahman confirmed the casualties and vowed to "strike with an iron fist" against anyone threatening Syria's security. In response, the Syrian military administration announced the launch of an operation to pursue remnants of Assad's regime in Tartous, Latakia, Homs, and other coastal regions. Reinforcements totaling 10,000 fighters have been deployed to restore security and stability. Authorities have imposed a curfew in areas including Qudsaya in the Damascus countryside as security forces conduct sweeps to seize illegal weapons and arrest suspects. The Interior Ministry has given a four-day ultimatum for those involved to surrender themselves and their weapons. Officials stated they have identified wanted individuals, including former regime officers who have not reconciled their status with the new authorities. Clashes reportedly continue in rural Tartous as security forces engage with armed groups defying the transitional government.
