Two Injured as Melbourne's Adass Israel Synagogue Torched in Suspected Antisemitic Arson Attack
Dec 6, 2024, 02:04 AM
Early Friday morning, the Adass Israel Synagogue in Ripponlea, Melbourne, was significantly damaged in a suspected antisemitic arson attack. The synagogue, built by Holocaust survivors, was set ablaze by two masked individuals who reportedly poured petrol around the entrance before igniting the fire and fleeing the scene. Two worshippers inside were injured, with one suffering serious burns. Over 60 firefighters and 17 fire trucks were involved in extinguishing the blaze, but the fire caused extensive damage, including the destruction of Torah scrolls and holy books. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the attack as an act of antisemitism, stating, "I have zero tolerance for antisemitism. It has absolutely no place in Australia." Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan visited the site and pledged $100,000 to rebuild the synagogue. The incident has drawn comparisons to Kristallnacht and has sparked outrage and concern within Australia's Jewish community, with calls for stronger action against antisemitism.
