VisitZheng Qinwen Defeats Osaka to Reach Rome Quarterfinals, Sets Record
May 13, 2024, 10:36 AM
Zheng Qinwen, the No.7 seed, has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Italian Open in Rome for the second consecutive year after defeating former world No.1 Naomi Osaka with scores of 6-2, 6-4. This victory marks her as the youngest Asian player in the Open Era to reach back-to-back women's singles quarterfinals at this tournament at the age of 21 years and 217 days. Zheng's achievement also makes her only the second Asian player to reach multiple WTA-1000 quarterfinals on both hard and clay courts before the age of 23, joining Osaka in this rare feat. She is now set to face the winner of the match between Gauff and Badosa.
