VisitYamandú Orsi, Protégé of 'Pepe' Mujica, Wins Uruguay Presidency with 51% of Vote
Nov 25, 2024, 02:57 AM
Yamandú Orsi of the left-wing opposition party Frente Amplio has been elected president of Uruguay, according to official results. Orsi secured a narrow victory over center-right candidate Álvaro Delgado in a closely contested runoff election held on Sunday, winning approximately 51% of the vote with over 99% of ballots counted. Delgado conceded defeat and congratulated Orsi. This marks the return of the left to power in Uruguay after five years of conservative rule under President Luis Lacalle Pou. Orsi, considered a protégé of former president José 'Pepe' Mujica and the third leftist president in the country's history, has pledged to promote dialogue and focus on social justice issues, vowing to leave no one behind economically, socially, or politically. Voter turnout was high, reaching 89.4%.
