VisitWorld No. 2 Iga Swiatek Suspended One Month for Trimetazidine Doping Violation
Nov 28, 2024, 02:41 PM
Iga Swiatek, the world number two tennis player and five-time Grand Slam champion, has accepted a one-month suspension after testing positive for the banned substance trimetazidine (TMZ) in an out-of-competition sample in August 2024. The International Tennis Integrity Association (ITIA) determined that the source of the substance was contaminated melatonin, a medication Swiatek was taking for jet lag and sleep issues. The ITIA ruled that Swiatek bore no significant fault or negligence for the failed test, and the violation was deemed unintentional. Swiatek was provisionally suspended from September 12 to October 4, 2024, and will serve the remainder of her sanction through November 2024. The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) has acknowledged the ITIA's decision.
