VisitWind Power Generates 83 TWh, Surpassing Gas at 29.4% to Become UK's Top Electricity Source in 2024
Jan 7, 2025, 07:00 AM
In 2024, Great Britain achieved a record year for wind power, generating nearly 83 terawatt-hours of electricity, surpassing the previous year's output. Wind power overtook gas as the largest source of electricity in the UK, accounting for 29.4% of the nation's power, while gas contributed 25.9%. This shift marks a significant step towards the UK's goal of decarbonizing its electricity grid by 2030, with the government aiming to reduce the reliance on fossil fuels to less than 5% by that year. The increase in wind power, alongside other renewable sources like solar, has contributed to a reduction in the carbon intensity of electricity generation, dropping to 124g of CO2 per kilowatt-hour in 2024 from 419g in 2014.
