VisitWildfire Devastates Jasper, Alberta, Destroying 30% to 50% of Town; 25,000 Evacuated
Jul 26, 2024, 06:10 AM
A devastating wildfire has ravaged the town of Jasper, Alberta, leading to the evacuation of 25,000 residents and tourists. The fire, which began less than 48 hours prior, has destroyed between 30% and 50% of the town's structures, including critical infrastructure such as the Trans Mountain Pipeline and the wastewater treatment plant. Firefighters have been battling the blaze, which grew to 36,000 hectares, but faced a wall of flames that proved impossible to contain. The mayor of Jasper described the destruction as 'beyond description and comprehension.' Cooler temperatures and rain are expected to aid firefighting efforts. Despite the devastation, all critical infrastructure has been successfully protected. The fire reached Jasper National Park on Wednesday evening, and officials confirm 358 structures have been destroyed.
