VisitWall Street Journal's Evan Gershkovich to Stand Trial in Yekaterinburg on Espionage Charges
Jun 13, 2024, 01:57 PM
Evan Gershkovich, a U.S. journalist for The Wall Street Journal, will stand trial in Yekaterinburg, Russia, on espionage charges. Gershkovich was detained by Russian authorities on March 29, 2023, and has been accused of collecting secret information for the CIA about the tank manufacturer Uralvagonzavod. Russian prosecutors, including the Prosecutor General’s office, have formally approved the indictment, sending the case to court and ending any future pre-detention appeals. Despite the serious allegations, no evidence has been publicly presented to support the charges. Gershkovich's detention, now close to 15 months, has been widely criticized as based on bogus charges, with many calling for his immediate release.
