Veteran filmmaker Shyam Benegal, a pioneer of India's parallel cinema movement, passed away on Monday at the age of 90 after a prolonged battle with kidney-related issues. His daughter, Pia Benegal, confirmed his death on Monday evening. He died at Mumbai's Wockhardt Hospital. Benegal was honored with the Padma Shri in 1976 and the Padma Bhushan in 1991 for his significant contributions to Indian cinema. Recipient of 18 National Film Awards, he was known for directing acclaimed films such as "Ankur," "Manthan," "Nishant," and "Bhumika," celebrated for their realism and depth.
