VisitValencia Closes Three Beaches After 2-Kilometer Oil Spill
Jul 17, 2024, 05:40 AM
The city council of Valencia, Spain, has closed three beaches on the Mediterranean coast following an oil spill. The affected beaches, Saler, Arbre del Gos, and Garrofera, were shut down after oil or fuel washed up on a 2-kilometer (1.2-mile) stretch of sand. The cause of the spill, which is suspected to have originated from a tanker, remains unclear. Cleaning workers in protective suits have been deployed to clean up the oil at El Saler beach in the Albufera Natural Park, and drones and helicopters are being used to locate the spill's origin and assess its severity. The spill is currently limited to the affected area, and efforts are ongoing to reclaim the beaches.
