US, UK, EU, Israel Among 50 Nations to Sign First Legally Binding AI Treaty

The United States, United Kingdom, European Union, Israel, and several other countries have signed the world's first legally binding treaty on artificial intelligence. The Framework Convention on AI, signed on September 5, 2024, at the Council of Europe's convention in Vilnius, aims to regulate the safe use of AI while safeguarding human rights, democracy, and the rule of law. The treaty, which took over two years to draft and involved more than 50 countries, marks a significant step in global AI governance. UK Lord Chancellor Shabana Mahmood and representatives from other signatory nations emphasized the importance of preventing AI from shaping society adversely. The treaty aligns with the European AI Act and seeks to promote innovation in responsible AI.
