VisitUP Govt Faces Legal Challenges Over Kanwar Yatra Directive, Supreme Court Issues Interim Order
Jul 26, 2024, 03:09 AM
The Uttar Pradesh government is facing legal challenges over its directive requiring eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to display the names and identities of their owners. The directive, which has sparked controversy and allegations of targeting Indian Muslims, aims to ensure transparency and informed choice for consumers during the Hindu pilgrimage. The Supreme Court has issued an interim order staying the implementation of the directive, and the US State Department has acknowledged the reports and the court's order. The Uttar Pradesh government defended the measure, citing the need to avoid confusion, ensure peaceful pilgrimage, and respect Kanwariyas' religious sentiments, aligning it with the Constitution's fundamental duties. The National Loktantrik Party has filed a PIL in the Allahabad High Court seeking to quash a related order by the Varanasi Municipal Corporation to close meat shops along the Yatra route. Vakeel Ahmed had to change his shop banner twice, costing Rs 3500.
