VisitUNIFIL Naqoura HQ Hit by Explosions Again; Two Sri Lankan Peacekeepers Seriously Injured
Oct 11, 2024, 12:50 PM
United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reported that its Naqoura headquarters in southern Lebanon was affected by explosions for the second time in the last 48 hours. Two Sri Lankan UN peacekeepers suffered serious shrapnel injuries after two explosions occurred close to an observation tower at the headquarters. One of the injured peacekeepers was taken to a hospital in Tyre, while the other is being treated locally. Additionally, T-walls at UN position 1-31 were destroyed. The cause of the explosions has not been officially confirmed, but some reports suggest Israeli artillery and tank shelling, as Israel has been calling on UNIFIL to evacuate the base for over a week. Two UNIFIL soldiers were also wounded yesterday from tank shelling. UNIFIL stated that "any deliberate attack on peacekeepers is a grave violation of international humanitarian law and UN Security Council resolution 1701."
