VisitUNIFIL Concerned Over IDF Activities Near Trapped Irish Peacekeepers in Lebanon, Says Simon Harris
Oct 6, 2024, 06:05 PM
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has expressed deep concern over recent activities by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) near its positions in southern Lebanon. The IDF's establishment of posts adjacent to UNIFIL's positions, including those manned by Irish peacekeepers, has been described as 'extremely dangerous.' Thirty Irish soldiers have been trapped inside an outpost close to the Israel-Lebanon border for several days. Despite Israel's request to move some of its posts, Ireland has refused to withdraw its troops. The situation has escalated with UNIFIL urging adherence to UN Security Council Resolution 1701 to restore stability. The safety of Irish troops is being monitored, with no current plans to evacuate them, according to Irish Times and Simon Harris. Hezbollah's involvement has further complicated the situation.
