VisitUNGA Passes Non-Binding Resolutions for Gaza Ceasefire, Hostage Release, and UNRWA Support
Dec 11, 2024, 10:55 PM
The United Nations General Assembly has overwhelmingly passed two significant resolutions concerning the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The first resolution, with 159 votes in favor, 9 against, and 11 abstentions, reaffirmed support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and deplored a recent Israeli law banning UNRWA's operations. The second resolution, passed with 158 votes in favor, 9 against, and 13 abstentions, demanded an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, as well as the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages. These resolutions, although non-binding, represent a symbolic gesture and were opposed by the United States and Israel. Countries like Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Poland supported both resolutions.
