VisitUNC Fires Mack Brown Despite Plans to Return; Coach to Lead Final Game
Nov 26, 2024, 03:37 PM
North Carolina has announced that head football coach Mack Brown will not return next season. Despite Brown's recent statements of his intention to continue coaching, including saying, "While this was not the perfect time and way in which I imagined going out, no time will ever be the perfect time," the university informed him on Monday that he will not be retained. The decision comes after a blowout loss to Boston College on Saturday. Brown will coach the team's final regular-season game against NC State on Saturday, but a decision has not been reached on whether he will coach in a potential bowl game. The veteran coach is owed approximately $2.8 million in buyout. Brown, 73, has spent 16 seasons at UNC over two tenures, amassing an overall record of 113-78-1. UNC Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham informed Brown of the decision on Monday.
