The United Nations, through its Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and the UN Human Rights Office, has released a comprehensive 26-page report detailing the state of media freedom in Afghanistan over the past three years since the Taliban regained control. The report highlights significant challenges faced by journalists and media workers, including over 336 instances of threats, intimidation, arbitrary detentions, mistreatment, judicial prosecutions, and imprisonment. The UN has urged the Taliban to ensure the safety and freedom of journalists, citing an increasingly restrictive environment characterized by censorship, intimidation, and limited access to information. The report also notes that the Taliban has detained journalists 256 times since their takeover three years ago, with the UN documenting over 300 attacks against the press during this period.
