VisitUN General Assembly Designates July 11 as Srebrenica Genocide Memorial Day with 84 Votes in Favor
May 23, 2024, 01:04 PM
The UN General Assembly (UNGA) has adopted a resolution to designate July 11 as the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Srebrenica Genocide. The resolution, which unequivocally condemns any denial of the genocide, was passed with 84 votes in favor, 19 against, and 68 abstentions. Despite opposition from Serbia and Bosnian Serbs, the resolution received support from a wide range of countries, including Montenegro, Albania, and North Macedonia, part of the Open Balkan allies. The resolution aims to honor the memory of approximately 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys who were killed in the Srebrenica massacre.
