VisitUK Sanctions 30 Russian Shadow Fleet Ships Before G7 Meeting
Nov 25, 2024, 12:34 PM
The UK government has imposed its largest-ever sanctions package against Russia's shadow fleet, targeting 30 ships involved in circumventing Western oil export restrictions. Foreign Secretary David Lammy announced this move ahead of a G7 foreign ministers' meeting in Italy, emphasizing the UK's commitment to disrupting Russia's oil revenues that fund the ongoing war in Ukraine. Lammy stated, 'Russia's oil revenues are fuelling the fires of war and destruction in Ukraine and I am committed to using every tool at my disposal to disrupt them.' The sanctions also include Russian insurance firms AlfaStrakhovanie and VSK, which are linked to the shadow fleet operations. The targeted ships have transported over $4.3 billion worth of oil and petroleum products in the last year alone, highlighting the scale of the shadow fleet's activities.
