UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is set to declare people smuggling a 'national security' issue as part of a comprehensive plan to tackle the rising number of illegal Channel crossings, which has seen 32,000 people cross so far this year. Starmer will launch a new Organised Immigration Crime Intelligence Unit and double the funding for the Border Security Command, adding an extra £75 million. This initiative includes fast-tracking justice for people smugglers and adopting counter-terrorism tactics. Starmer will also engage in talks with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and emphasize the importance of international cooperation to address the crisis. The announcement will be made at the upcoming Interpol General Assembly in Glasgow.
