Oct 14, 2024, 11:45 AM
Uganda has signed an EPC/TURNKEY contract with Turkish firm Yapi Merkezi to construct a 272-kilometre Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) line. The UGX 505 billion ($140 million) project aims to boost regional trade and reduce transport costs. This development follows the withdrawal of Chinese support, which had previously hindered the project's progress. The contract includes a 40% local content strategy and is expected to be completed within 48 months from the groundbreaking. The railway line will connect Kampala to Malaba, enhancing connectivity and economic integration within the region.
