VisitU.S. Grants 18-Month Protected Status to 11,000 Lebanese Nationals Amid Israel-Hezbollah Conflict
Oct 17, 2024, 05:21 PM
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced it will grant Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to Lebanese nationals currently residing in the United States as of October 16, 2024. This designation, lasting for 18 months, allows eligible individuals to remain in the country and apply for work authorization. The decision comes amid the escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, with ongoing armed conflict and extraordinary conditions preventing nationals from safely returning home. Approximately 11,000 Lebanese nationals are expected to benefit from this policy. The Biden administration had previously offered a different form of protection for Lebanese immigrants in July. This move also extends to Lebanese F-1 students, who will be permitted to work more hours and reduce their course loads while maintaining their visa status. Senators, including Gary Peters and Dick Durbin, have applauded the administration's decision.
