VisitU.S. Education Department Finds Michigan, CUNY Failed to Address Antisemitism, Anti-Palestinian, Anti-Arab Incidents
Jun 17, 2024, 05:05 PM
The U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights has announced the resolution of complaints against the University of Michigan and the City University of New York (CUNY) for failing to adequately address antisemitic, anti-Palestinian, and anti-Arab incidents on their campuses. These complaints, some dating back to 2019, highlighted that both universities did not properly assess whether protests over the Israel-Hamas war created hostile environments for students of Jewish ancestry. The findings indicate that the universities were aware of the discrimination and harassment but did not respond promptly or effectively, leading to a hostile environment. This marks the first resolution of such complaints since October 7, and both universities are now required to take steps to protect their students and comply with Title VI obligations.
