The United States has officially confirmed that it has authorized Ukraine to use American ATACMS long-range missiles in its conflict with Russia. The White House, through spokesman John Kirby, stated that the missiles can be used for strikes in the Kursk region and nearby areas, framing the decision as a matter of Ukraine's self-defense. This marks the first formal acknowledgment of such permission by the U.S. administration, which comes one week after initial reports. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin also confirmed that the Biden administration has approved the use of these missiles, alongside antipersonnel landmines, in Ukraine's military efforts against Russia. The authorization allows Ukraine to deploy ATACMS on an immediate need basis.
