VisitU.S. Charges Russian GRU Officers for 'WhisperGate' Cyber Attacks on Ukraine and NATO
Sep 5, 2024, 05:47 PM
The U.S. Department of Justice has charged five Russian GRU officers and one Russian civilian with conspiring to hack the Ukrainian government and its allies. The indictment, unsealed on Thursday, alleges that the defendants conducted cyber attacks in advance of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. These attacks targeted Ukrainian critical infrastructure, a U.S. government agency, and 26 NATO countries. The hacking campaign, known as 'WhisperGate,' involved the use of wiper-malware to disrupt networks. The FBI has issued arrest warrants for the accused Russian military intelligence officers, who are part of Unit 29155.
