VisitU.S. and Canada Sanction Vancouver-Based Samidoun as Terrorist Group Linked to PFLP
Oct 15, 2024, 03:20 PM
The United States and Canada have jointly designated the Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network, a Vancouver-based organization, as a terrorist entity. The U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has sanctioned Samidoun, calling it a sham charity that serves as an international fundraiser for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a U.S.-designated terrorist organization. The sanctions also target Khaled Barakat, a key leader of Samidoun and a member of the PFLP; his wife, Charlotte Kates, is also associated with the organization. The designation follows recent protests organized by Samidoun where participants chanted "Death to Canada" and burned the Canadian flag in Vancouver. Samidoun has been previously banned in Israel and Germany. Canada added Samidoun to its list of terrorist entities under the Criminal Code, effective October 11.
