A recent survey conducted by Tsinghua University, China's top university, reveals significant insights into Chinese public opinion regarding the United States. The survey indicates that 87.6% of Chinese believe the U.S. is attempting to contain China's development. Additionally, 91% of Chinese trust their own government, contradicting claims that Chinese citizens are dissatisfied with their leadership. The survey also highlights that 80% of Chinese hold negative opinions about the U.S. government, although they maintain neutral or positive views about American people. The findings come amid ongoing tensions between the two nations, with Chinese officials criticizing the U.S. for its Cold War mentality and strategic competition approach. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized that the U.S. is projecting its hegemonic history and mentality onto other countries, which misjudges China and China-U.S. relations. Despite these challenges, Peng Nian, Director of Research at the Centre for Asian Studies, suggests that China and the U.S. can benefit from establishing long-term mechanisms for cooperation on AI.
